ABOUT

I’m artist and researcher, mostly working with photography. My interest lies in nature, technology, and the consequences of Global Change.

In 2016 and together with friends, I had the mildly absurd idea to build a sustainable floating artist studio and community hub called the »Conquest of the Improbable« and more recently also a floating garden called the »Arche Opteryx«, growing apples, sprouts, kale and plenty of flowers. To finance our art projects, we occasionally rent out the island.

Location

In summer, roughly April to November, the boat is moored on the Rummelbsurger lake in the center of Berlin. We have a rowing boat and a canoe as a dinghy to ferry to the boat (of course they can also be used for a romantic sunset-cruise on the river Spree).

Rental

To share the incredible experience of the self-built boat (and to finance the project), we occasionally rent the boat for overnight stays, as a vacation home, for workshops, and as a film set.

The boat is 5m wide and 11,5m long. It’s fully equipped with anything that might come to your mind: a large dining (or workshop) table, couch, kitchen, bathroom, queen-size bed—and loads of plant and light.

In summer months, the »Arche Opteryx« raft is attached to the house boat. It’s a floating garden and a huge sun deck. There’s an apple tree growing, a vegetable bed, deck chairs and a large bbq.

Workshops, Events & Floating Office

There’s something amazing happening once a group sits down at our large table: the design, the slow rocking – but foremost: the fact to all be in the same boat create a unique, creative atmosphere that levels any hierarchy instantaneously. We experienced it over and over again, for example during artists talks at high level international art fairs: walk-in audience and even the most famous artists & curators were in a mutually enriching conversation withing seconds.

We offer our boat’s super powers for your company event or workshop!

The boat has all office material aboard, such as flip chart, a full magnetic wall, facilitator’s toolkit, printer, wifi, projector & screen. We provide you with coffee, tea, and soft drinks as well as fruits & snacks.

It’s suitable for up to 12 persons.

Rate: 800€/day (9.00-19.00) + VAT

Special offer for mini groups up to 5 persons and without any catering: 650€/day + VAT

Vacation Home & Overnight Stays

The bathroom boasts a walk-in rain-shower with jungle wallpaper. The kitchenette is equipped with a gas stove, sink, and all pots, pans & utensils you might need for a 5 course menu.

The main bed – we call it the captain’s berth – is a large double bed separated by curtains from the main room. The second bed doubles as the couch but it has a real mattress.

There is a huge skylight over the bed for romantic star watching while dozing off and plenty of nice details will make you smile again and again.

The whole boat is yours!

We have a lovely canoe complete with pic-nic basket and everything that you can use free of charge as well as two old city bikes.

The boat has a wood stove as well as automatic gas heating and we’ll leave you plenty of wood for romantic evenings by the fireplace. Even on the coldest winter nights the boat is cosy and warm.

Please note: as it’s a boat and as it’s self-built a lot of things are a little bit different than in an ordinary home. The toilet is a dry compost toilet (seriously requiring men to sit down), for example, and water is filtered lake water. Also, there’s a strict natural cosmetics / shower gel policy to minimize pollution. (Don’t worry, we’ll supply you with some bottled drinking water and all-organic shower gel & shampoo.)

Also, the space needs a bit more care than your ordinary bricks-and-mortar building. We expect guests to respect the space and to take good care. Please leave the boat tidy!

You can use our floating sauna whenever you like. It has large panorama windows out onto the lake. Floor and benches are made from an old turn-of-the-century wooden floor. There’s no extra charge, just leave some tip for the wood you burn.

We also have bicycles available for you free of charge to explore the city.

Rate:

200€/night (always cheapest here!) inclusive all fees & taxes, minimum stay: 2 nights, 7th night free, including floating sauna, flexible check-in/check-out, free cancellation up to 7 days in advance.
